The Chilean afternoon sun cast long shadows across the courtyard of the Pascal family home as laughter and the aroma of traditional cooking wafted through the air. Pedro sat back in his chair, watching in amazement as Cassandra effortlessly switched between Spanish and Korean while helping his sister Javiera prepare nachos in the outdoor kitchen.
“¡Mira cómo cocina tu novia!” Jose, Pedro’s father, nudged him with a knowing smile. “She’s a natural with the family.”
Pedro couldn’t help but beam with pride. “She’s incredible, Papá. Sometimes I still can’t believe she chose me.”
Across the courtyard, Cassandra’s melodious laughter mixed with Javiera’s as they shared some private joke. Her dark hair caught the sunlight, and Pedro found himself mesmerized, just as he had been the day they first met on set two years ago.
“You know, mi hijo,” Jose leaned in conspiratorially, “your Tía Carmen was asking when you’re going to make an honest woman of her. You’re not getting any younger.”
“Papá, please,” Pedro groaned, though he couldn’t hide his smile. “We’re taking our time.”
“Time? Ha!” His uncle Miguel chimed in from nearby. “You’ll be fifty before you know it, sobrino. And that beautiful woman over there? She’s perfect mother material.”
As if on cue, Cassandra looked up and caught Pedro’s eye, flashing him that brilliant smile that never failed to make his heart skip. She excused herself from Javiera and made her way over to their table.
“¿Todo bien?” she asked, placing a gentle hand on Pedro’s shoulder.
“Just the usual family interrogation,” Pedro replied, pulling her closer. “They want to know when we’re getting married and having babies.”
Instead of being embarrassed, Cassandra laughed and addressed Jose in perfect Spanish, “Your son is very traditional, Papá Jose. He wants to do everything properly.”
“Ay, mi niña,” Jose reached for her hand, “you’re already family. The papers are just a formality.”
Pedro watched as Cassandra chatted with his father and uncles, seamlessly becoming part of their animated conversation about Chilean politics. His grandmother called from her seat near the garden, “¡Casandra, ven aquí!” and without missing a beat, Cassandra excused herself to join the matriarch.
“She’s more Chilean than some Chileans,” Miguel observed with approval.
Pedro stood up, his eyes following Cassandra as she sat with his grandmother, the two of them already deep in conversation. “I bought a ring,” he confessed quietly to his father.
Jose’s eyes widened. “¿En serio? When?”
“Last month in Seoul, while visiting her parents. Her mother helped me choose it.”
“Ahh, so that’s why you were so nervous during that trip,” Jose chuckled. “When are you going to ask her?”
Pedro ran a hand through his hair, a nervous habit he’d never outgrown. “Tonight, actually. I’ve arranged for us to go up to the roof after dinner. The sunset should be perfect.”
“Mi hijo,” Jose’s voice grew soft with emotion, “she will say yes. Anyone can see how much she loves you.”
Later that evening, as the family gathered around the long table for dinner, Pedro couldn’t help but marvel at how Cassandra had transformed his life. She was discussing Korean cinema with his cousin in fluent Spanish, then turning to explain a point in Korean to his aunt who had visited Seoul once, all while helping serve the food and making sure everyone’s glasses were full.
When the moment finally came, and they stood together on the rooftop with the Santiago skyline painted in sunset colors, Pedro’s carefully prepared speech disappeared from his mind. Instead, he simply held her hands and spoke from his heart.
“Cassandra, mi amor, I’ve spent my life playing different roles, but being myself with you is the greatest role I’ve ever had. Would you consider taking on a new role with me? As my wife?”
Her eyes sparkled with tears and joy as she answered in all five languages she knew, “Yes. Sí. Ja. Oui. 네.”
From below, the sound of cheering erupted – the entire family had been watching from the courtyard. Cassandra laughed through her tears as Pedro slipped the ring onto her finger, and he knew that this was just the beginning of their greatest adventure together.
