The soft glow of string lights illuminated the living room as laughter and the clink of wine glasses filled the air. Lorena stood near the snack table, her blonde hair catching the light as she arranged a cheese plate, secretly watching Alonso across the room. They had been carefully dancing around their growing feelings at work for months, stealing glances over computer monitors and sharing inside jokes during coffee breaks. Tonight was different – tonight they’d arrived together, though they weren’t quite ready to announce it to their coworkers.

Tyler’s voice cut through her thoughts as he approached the snack table. “Well, if it isn’t the party’s resident chef,” he said, reaching past her to grab a handful of chips. His familiar cologne brought back memories she’d rather forget.

“Hardly,” Lorena replied with a practiced smile, taking a step back. “Just arranging what Sandra already prepared.”

From across the room, Alonso noticed the interaction, his tall frame tensing slightly as he watched Tyler lean closer to Lorena. He knew about their history – she’d been honest about everything when they’d first started seeing each other two weeks ago.

“Who’s ready for Pictionary?” Sandra called out, drawing everyone to the living room.

As people settled into teams, Lorena found herself naturally gravitating toward Alonso. Tyler noticed, his eyes narrowing as Alonso’s hand briefly touched the small of Lorena’s back while they sat down together on the couch.

The game began, and Lorena couldn’t help but laugh at Alonso’s terrible drawings. “What is that supposed to be?” she teased, poking his arm. “A horse or a very confused giraffe?”

“It’s clearly a dog,” Alonso defended, his shy demeanor melting away as he grinned at her.

Tyler watched their easy interaction from his spot across the coffee table, recognition slowly dawning in his eyes. He remembered when Lorena used to look at him that way, before he’d decided he “wasn’t ready for anything serious.”

As the evening progressed, the group moved on to charades. Lorena stood up for her turn, acting out her clue with dramatic flair that had Alonso calling out answers between fits of laughter. Her sassy shimmy when he finally guessed correctly made everyone chuckle, but Tyler only saw the way Alonso’s eyes lingered on her, full of affection.

During a break in the games, Lorena slipped into the kitchen for a water refill. Tyler followed her.

“So, you and the tall guy, huh?” he said, leaning against the counter.

Lorena’s cheeks flushed slightly. “His name is Alonso.”

“Didn’t take you long to move on,” Tyler remarked, attempting to sound casual but unable to hide the edge in his voice.

“Move on?” Lorena turned to face him, her voice quiet but firm. “Tyler, you made it very clear we were nothing serious. Remember?”

Before Tyler could respond, Alonso appeared in the doorway. He hesitated, reading the tension in the room.

“Everything okay?” he asked, his usual shyness replaced by gentle concern.

Lorena’s face softened as she looked at him. “Everything’s perfect,” she said, walking over to stand beside him. The simple action spoke volumes.

Tyler watched as Alonso’s hand found Lorena’s, their fingers intertwining naturally. He saw what he’d thrown away – not just Lorena’s affection, but the chance at something real.

Back in the living room, the games continued, but something had shifted. Lorena and Alonso no longer tried to hide their connection. When she shivered slightly, he draped his jacket over her shoulders. When he struggled with a word during word association, she finished his sentence without thinking.

As the night wound down and guests began to leave, Tyler found himself watching them gather their things. Alonso held Lorena’s purse while she slipped into her coat, and the simple domesticity of it made Tyler’s chest tighten with regret.

“Hey,” he called out as they headed for the door. They both turned. “You guys… you look good together.”

Lorena’s surprise melted into a genuine smile. “Thanks, Tyler.”

Outside, under the starlit sky, Alonso pulled Lorena close as they walked to his car. “That wasn’t so bad, was it?” he asked, referring to their unofficial debut as a couple.

“No,” she laughed, wrapping her arm around his waist. “Though your Pictionary skills might need some work.”

“That was definitely a dog,” he insisted, making her giggle.

As they reached the car, Lorena turned to face him. “You know what though? I’m kind of glad everyone knows now.”

“Yeah?” Alonso’s eyes softened as he looked down at her.

“Yeah,” she said, rising on her tiptoes to kiss him. “Now I can do that whenever I want.”

Alonso smiled against her lips, pulling her closer. The string lights from the house party twinkled behind them, but neither noticed – they were too busy writing the beginning of their own love story.
