The gentle sound of waves lapping against the shore has always been my favorite melody, but today it feels different. As I sit here on our favorite stretch of beach, watching Janet’s hair dance in the sea breeze, I’m reminded of how lucky I am. The setting sun paints the sky in shades of pink and orange, casting a warm glow across her face as she leans against my shoulder.

“Do you remember the first time we came here?” she asks, intertwining her fingers with mine. Of course I do – how could I forget? It was exactly one year ago, when this very beach became our special place.

“You were wearing that blue sundress,” I reply, smiling at the memory. “And you got mad at me because I wouldn’t tell you where we were going.”

Janet laughs, the sound mixing perfectly with the rhythm of the waves. “I wasn’t mad, Joey. I was… intrigued.” She pokes my ribs playfully. “Besides, it turned out to be the best surprise ever.”

I pull her closer, breathing in the coconut scent of her shampoo mixed with the salty air. That first date had been a pivotal moment for us. I’d packed a picnic, complete with her favorite strawberries and chocolate, and we’d talked until the stars came out. It was the night I knew she was the one.

“I love how you still look at me the same way you did back then,” Janet whispers, breaking me from my reverie. Her eyes meet mine, filled with the same warmth that made me fall for her in the first place.

“That’s because nothing’s changed,” I tell her, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “If anything, I fall more in love with you every day.”

We sit in comfortable silence for a while, watching the waves roll in and out. It’s these quiet moments I cherish most – when words aren’t necessary, when just being together is enough. Janet shifts slightly, drawing patterns in the sand with her free hand.

“Remember when we got caught in that sudden downpour last month?” she asks, giggling at the memory. “And you insisted we dance in the rain?”

“Best impromptu dance party ever,” I respond, pulling her to her feet. “Speaking of which…”

I take out my phone and play our song – the one that was playing during that rain-soaked dance. Janet’s eyes light up as the familiar melody fills the air. Without hesitation, she steps into my arms, and we begin swaying together on the empty beach.

“You’re such a romantic,” she murmurs against my chest.

“Only for you,” I reply, spinning her gently. The last rays of sunlight catch the happiness in her eyes, and my heart swells with love.

As our song ends, we remain in each other’s arms, neither wanting to break the spell of the moment. The stars are beginning to appear above us, and the temperature is dropping slightly, but I barely notice. All I can focus on is how perfectly Janet fits in my arms, how her presence makes everything else fade away.

“I brought something for you,” I say, reaching into my pocket. I pull out a small shell – one we’d found on our first date, perfectly heart-shaped and pearlescent in the fading light.

“You kept it all this time?” Janet’s voice is soft with wonder as she takes the shell.

“Of course. I’ve been saving it for the right moment.” I take a deep breath, gathering my courage. “Janet, this past year has been the best of my life. Every moment with you, whether we’re doing something exciting or just sitting quietly together, is precious to me. I love the way you scrunch your nose when you laugh, how passionate you get about helping others, how you always know exactly what to say to make me smile.”

I can see tears forming in her eyes as I continue, “I want to spend the rest of my life collecting moments with you, making memories on this beach and everywhere else. I want to dance with you in the rain, watch sunsets together, and fall more in love with you every single day.”

Dropping to one knee in the soft sand, I pull out a small box. “Janet, will you marry me?”

Her hands fly to her mouth as I open the box, revealing a ring with a small diamond that catches the last light of day. Tears are flowing freely down her cheeks now, but her smile is radiant.

“Yes,” she whispers, then louder, “Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!”

As I slip the ring onto her finger and pull her into my arms, the waves continue their eternal dance with the shore. But now their song seems to be celebrating with us, marking the beginning of our forever together on this beach where our love story began.
