I never thought I’d find love at my parents’ annual charity gala, of all places. Standing in the corner of our mansion’s grand ballroom, I watched guests in designer wear mingle while I tried my best to become invisible. Despite growing up in this world of wealth and privilege, I never quite felt like I belonged.
That’s when I first saw him – Roy Mitchell. He wasn’t wearing an expensive suit like the other young men, just a simple navy blazer and khakis, but he carried himself with an easy confidence that made him stand out. I later learned he was there because he’d won a scholarship my family’s foundation had created for promising engineering students.
“You look about as comfortable as I feel,” he said, suddenly appearing beside me with two glasses of sparkling cider. He offered me one with a warm smile that made my heart skip.
“Is it that obvious?” I asked, accepting the drink and trying to hide my blush.
“Well, you’ve been studying that painting for twenty minutes,” he gestured to the wall behind us, “and it’s just a mirror.”
I couldn’t help but laugh, feeling my usual anxiety start to melt away. “I’m Ria,” I managed, finally meeting his kind brown eyes.
“Roy. And before you ask – yes, I’m the scholarship kid everyone’s been whispering about.” His frankness was refreshing in a world where people usually tiptoed around such things.
We spent the next hour talking in our little corner, discovering we both loved old sci-fi movies and had a shared hatred of small talk. Roy told me about growing up with his single mom, working part-time through high school to help with bills, and how engineering was his passion because he loved solving problems.
“Your family’s scholarship changed my life,” he said earnestly. “I never thought I’d get to pursue my dreams like this.”
“I’m glad,” I replied softly, wondering if he’d think differently about me once he realized whose daughter I was.
As if reading my mind, he smiled. “I know you’re Ria Bennett. Your photo’s on the foundation’s website. But you’re nothing like I expected.”
“Oh? What did you expect?”
“Someone spoiled, probably. Instead, I met this shy girl who’s been hiding from her own party and quoting ‘Blade Runner’ perfectly.”
The evening flew by, and when Roy asked for my number at the end of the night, I gave it without hesitation. What followed were weeks of late-night texts, coffee dates between his classes, and walks through the city where we’d talk about everything and nothing.
Roy never treated me like the rich girl everyone else saw. To him, I was just Ria – the girl who loved photography, collected vintage cameras, and got nervous in crowds. He showed me his world too, taking me to small diners with the best milkshakes and introducing me to his mom, who hugged me like I was family.
But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. There were whispers about us being from different worlds, and I knew some of my parents’ friends disapproved. One evening, after overhearing particularly harsh comments at another social event, I broke down.
“Maybe they’re right,” I sobbed to Roy in the garden. “We’re too different. Your world, my world…”
He took my hands in his, his expression serious. “Ria, look at me. There aren’t two different worlds. There’s just this one, and in it, I found you. That’s all that matters to me.”
Then he kissed me, right there under the stars, and everything else faded away. It didn’t matter that he worked part-time at a coffee shop while studying, or that my family had a wing of the hospital named after them. What mattered was how safe I felt in his arms, how he made me laugh, and how we understood each other in ways no one else did.
Now, a year later, as I watch him chat easily with my parents at another charity gala, I smile remembering that first night. Roy catches my eye across the room and winks, excusing himself to join me.
“Still hiding in corners?” he teases, pulling me close.
“Not hiding,” I reply, resting my head on his shoulder. “Just waiting for you to find me. You always do.”
And he always will. Because love doesn’t care about bank accounts or social circles. It cares about two hearts finding their way to each other, even in the most unexpected places.
