I never expected to fall in love while working a case, especially not with my partner. But standing in the grand lobby of the Belmont Hotel, watching Dan examine the diamond necklace that had mysteriously appeared in room 512, I realized my heart wasn’t racing just because of the investigation.

“What do you think, Bex?” Dan asked, holding the necklace under the crystal chandelier. His blue eyes caught the light, and I forced myself to look away.

“Same signature as the other three cases,” I replied, keeping my voice professional. “The thief returns the jewelry exactly three days after stealing it, always in a luxury hotel, always with a red rose.”

We’d been chasing this romantic burglar for months. Each time, an expensive piece would vanish from a wealthy victim’s home, only to reappear in a high-end hotel suite with a fresh rose and a note reading “Beauty deserves to be shared.”

“The hotel’s security cameras show nothing,” Dan said, running a hand through his dark hair. “It’s like our thief is a ghost.”

“Or has inside access.” I walked to the window, gazing out at the city lights. “We should stay here tonight, watch the room ourselves.”

Dan raised an eyebrow. “You want us to stake out a luxury suite together?”

I felt my cheeks warm. “Professionally speaking, of course.”

Hours later, we sat in the dimly lit room, takeout containers scattered between us on the plush carpet. The suite was gorgeous, with vintage furnishings and a view that made the city look like scattered diamonds.

“Remember our first case together?” Dan asked suddenly. “The art gallery robbery?”

I smiled. “When you accidentally triggered the security system and we had to hide in that supply closet for an hour?”

“That was the moment I knew,” he said softly.

My heart skipped. “Knew what?”

Before he could answer, the lights went out. We both jumped up, flashlights ready, but the room remained silent. Then came a subtle click from the hallway.

“The service entrance,” we whispered in unison.

We moved in perfect sync, the way we always did. Dan took the left side while I covered the right. The door creaked open, and a shadow slipped inside.

“Freeze! Police!” we shouted together.

The figure spun around, dropping something that clattered to the floor. When we turned on the lights, we found ourselves facing the hotel’s head of security. Behind her, a trail of red rose petals led to a velvet box.

After reading her rights and calling for backup, we discovered she’d been running an elaborate scheme to drive up the hotel’s publicity. Each “theft” had been staged, the owners secretly compensated for their participation.

“Well,” Dan said as we watched her being led away, “I guess that solves the mystery of the romantic burglar.”

“Yeah,” I sighed, feeling strangely disappointed. “Case closed.”

“Not quite.” Dan picked up one of the rose petals. “I still haven’t finished what I was saying earlier. About what I knew that day in the supply closet.”

I turned to face him, my pulse quickening. “And what was that?”

“I knew you were the one I wanted to solve all my mysteries with.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box. “So here’s one more mystery: Will you marry me?”

My breath caught as he opened the box, revealing a delicate diamond ring. “You planned this whole thing?”

He grinned. “I may have tipped off the hotel security chief about our surveillance timing. Seemed fitting to propose in the middle of solving a case about romantic gestures.”

Tears welled in my eyes as I looked at my partner, my best friend, the man who knew me better than anyone. “Yes,” I whispered. “Yes, I’ll marry you.”

As he slipped the ring onto my finger, I couldn’t help but laugh. “You know this means all our future anniversaries will be competing with case memories, right?”

“I’m counting on it,” he said, pulling me close. “We’ve always been better as partners.”

Under the soft hotel lights, with case files scattered around us and the city twinkling beyond the windows, we shared our first kiss as engaged partners. Some mysteries are meant to be solved, but others, like love, are meant to be endless adventures.
