I never thought I’d find love in the copy room, but life has a funny way of proving you wrong. Especially when you work at Palmer & Associates, where the office drama rivals any reality TV show.
My name’s Xander, and I’m what you’d call a “rising star” in corporate marketing. At least, that’s what my performance review said. In reality, I’m just a guy who’s mastered the art of looking busy while secretly perfecting my coffee-to-productivity ratio.
That’s when Andy walked into my life – literally walked into me while I was balancing three cups of artisanal coffee and a stack of reports. The collision was spectacular, the coffee trajectory even more so, and my white shirt never stood a chance.
“Oh god, I’m so sorry!” she exclaimed, frantically dabbing at my chest with paper towels. “I was reading this brief and… wait, is that a Star Wars tie?”
I glanced down at my now coffee-stained Millennium Falcon tie. “Yeah, it was. Now it’s more of a Death Star situation.”
She laughed, and something in my chest did a little flip that had nothing to do with scalding coffee.
Andy turned out to be our new creative director, and suddenly, those mind-numbing marketing meetings became the highlight of my week. She had this way of shooting down terrible ideas with such clever wit that even the person being criticized had to laugh.
My best friend and office conspirator, Noel, noticed my instant attraction. “You’re about as subtle as a fire alarm,” he told me during lunch. “Just ask her out already.”
“It’s not that simple,” I protested. “She’s technically my superior.”
“Oh please,” Lorian chimed in from the next table, not even pretending she hadn’t been eavesdropping. As HR manager, gossip was practically in her job description. “The only policy against office romance is that you have to disclose it to HR. Which means me. And I ship it.”
But every time I worked up the courage to ask Andy out, something would go hilariously wrong. Once, I practiced my speech in what I thought was an empty elevator, only to have it stop and reveal Andy standing there with our CEO. Another time, I sent her what I thought was a casual lunch invitation email, but accidentally copied the entire department. Noel still has it framed on his desk.
Things came to a head during our annual client appreciation gala. I was giving a presentation on our latest campaign when my PowerPoint suddenly switched to a slide show of cat memes – Noel’s idea of helping me “loosen up.”
As panic set in, I heard Andy’s distinctive laugh from the audience. Looking at her, something just clicked. I abandoned my script entirely and started improvising, working the cat memes into my marketing strategy. The clients loved it, and Andy’s eyes sparkled with that mixture of amusement and admiration that made my heart race.
After the presentation, she found me hiding in the copy room, my usual retreat for professional crises.
“That was either brilliant or insane,” she said, leaning against the doorframe.
“I’m voting for insane,” I replied, straightening my tie (this one decorated with tiny TIE fighters).
“I like insane,” she stepped closer. “Actually, I like a lot of things about you, Xander.”
My heart stopped. “You do?”
“Your terrible puns in status meetings. The way you always remember everyone’s coffee order. How you secretly help the interns with their projects. And yes, your dorky ties.”
“They’re not dorky, they’re classic sci-fi,” I defended automatically, then realized what she was saying. “Wait, you’ve been noticing all that?”
“I’m the creative director. Noticing details is kind of my thing.” She smiled. “So, are you going to ask me out, or do I need to stage another coffee collision?”
I couldn’t help grinning. “Would you like to have dinner with me? Preferably somewhere without PowerPoint or hot beverages?”
“I thought you’d never ask,” she laughed, then reached up and straightened my tie. “But I’m keeping the cat memes.”
Lorian was unbearably smug when we filed our disclosure forms, and Noel took full credit for being our “catalyst for romance.” But standing here now, watching Andy draw up marketing strategies with Star Wars references just to make me smile, I realize sometimes the best love stories aren’t about perfect timing or smooth moves.
Sometimes they’re about coffee stains, cat memes, and finding someone who makes your ordinary days extraordinary.
And yes, she still teases me about my ties. But now she buys them for me too.
