Pedro lay sprawled on the plush carpet of their Los Angeles home, making exaggerated facial expressions as he narrated “The Three Little Pigs” to his children. Carina giggled, her dark curls bouncing as she mimicked his wolf impression, while baby Diego contentedly munched on his crackers, occasionally offering wet ones to Pedro’s cheek.

“And then the wolf said…” Pedro began in his most theatrical voice.

“No, Papi! You did it wrong!” Carina interrupted, crossing her tiny arms. “Mama does it better. She goes…” The little girl attempted her best impression of Casandra’s accent, making Pedro’s heart swell with love and longing.

“Oh, does she now?” Pedro chuckled, pulling his daughter closer. “Well, Mama is pretty perfect at everything, isn’t she?”

“When is she coming home?” Carina asked, her bottom lip quivering slightly.

Pedro checked his watch. “Soon, mi amor. Very soon. Should we make her a surprise?”

Diego babbled in agreement, dropping his cracker to crawl toward his sister. Pedro watched his children interact, marveling at how seamlessly their blended family had come together. He thought back to the day he first met Casandra, four and a half years ago, on the set of a sci-fi series.

His phone buzzed with a text from Casandra: “Missing my three favorites. Be home in an hour. ♥”

“Okay, mis amores,” Pedro announced, sitting up. “Operation Surprise Mama begins now!”

They spent the next forty-five minutes creating a makeshift fort in the living room using blankets and chairs, with fairy lights strung inside. Pedro ordered Casandra’s favorite Korean takeout, and helped Carina draw a welcome home picture while keeping Diego from eating the crayons.

When they heard the garage door opening, Pedro whispered, “Places, everyone!”

Casandra’s footsteps echoed through the house. “Hello? Where is my family hiding?”

“SURPRISE!” Carina shouted, jumping out too early, making Pedro laugh as he emerged from the fort with Diego in his arms.

Casandra’s tired face lit up immediately. She was still in her costume from the set, her hair styled in elaborate braids, looking every bit as beautiful as the day they met.

“What is all this?” she asked, accepting an enthusiastic hug from Carina.

“We missed you,” Pedro said simply, leaning in to kiss her. “The kids were just telling me how I can’t tell stories as well as you.”

Casandra took Diego from his arms, pressing kisses to the baby’s chubby cheeks. “Is that so? Were they comparing our wolf impressions again?”

“Mama, come see our castle!” Carina tugged at her hand.

They all crawled into the fort, Casandra careful not to bump her head on the precariously balanced chairs. Inside, Pedro had laid out their dinner picnic-style on blankets.

“I can’t believe you did all this,” Casandra said softly, leaning against his shoulder as they watched Carina attempt to feed Diego a piece of kimbap.

“Remember our first date?” Pedro asked, wrapping an arm around her. “When we built that blanket fort in your trailer because it was raining too hard to go out?”

“And you tried to impress me with your terrible Korean vocabulary,” Casandra laughed.

“Hey, ‘saranghae’ worked, didn’t it?”

“Only because you looked so adorable trying to pronounce it.”

Pedro watched as she expertly prevented Diego from making a mess while simultaneously helping Carina with her chopsticks. “I fall more in love with you every day, you know that?”

Casandra turned to him, her eyes soft. “Even when I’m working late and leaving you with double dad duty?”

“Especially then,” he assured her. “Watching you chase your dreams while being the most amazing mother… how could I not?”

“Papi, Mama, watch!” Carina called out, attempting to balance a chopstick on her nose.

As they laughed together in their makeshift fort, Pedro felt complete. The sound of Diego’s happy babbling, Carina’s infectious giggles, and Casandra’s warm presence beside him – this was everything he never knew he needed until he found it.

Later, after the kids were asleep and they lay cuddled on the couch, Casandra whispered, “Thank you for today. For everything.”

Pedro kissed her forehead. “Just keeping the romance alive, mi amor.”

“We did good, didn’t we?” she mused, tracing patterns on his chest. “Building this life together?”

“The best thing I’ve ever done,” Pedro replied, holding her closer. “Even better than all those superhero movies.”

Casandra laughed softly. “I love you, you big softie.”

“Saranghae,” he replied with an exaggerated wink, making her giggle just like their daughter.

As they drifted off to sleep, Pedro thought about how their love story wasn’t just about the grand romantic gestures or the fairy-tale beginning – it was about these moments, building a life together, one blanket fort at a time.
